Relationship | Grandson of Thomas Baker. |
Birth | 27 Dec 1788 | James Crittenden Baker, son of David Baker and Mary Webb, was born on 27 Dec 1788 at Burke County, NC. Although Elma Baker's The Rugged Trail lists his first name as John, this son of David Baker was certainly named James, not John. He was named for his grandfather James Crittenden Webb.1 |
Name Variation | James Crittenden Baker was generally known as Crittenden.
1790 Census | 1790 | Based on age and gender, James Crittenden Baker was probably included, as a free white male under age 16, in the household of his father, David Baker, on the 1790 Census of Burke County, NC.2 |
1800 Census | 1800 | Based on age and gender, James Crittenden Baker was probably included as a free white male, under age 10, in the household of his father, David Baker, on the 1800 Census of Burke County, NC. In fact, Crittenden was around age 12 at the time of this census.3 |
Note | The available records provide powerful circumstantial evidence that one James C. Baker, who died in TN on 9 Oct 1865, was in fact James Crittenden Baker, son of David. First, DNA testing of a documented descendant of James C. Baker is a 36/37 marker match with known sons of David Baker (and the one marker that's different is one that the DNA testing company describes as a frequently mutating marker); thus, the DNA is a very strong match. Second, James C. Baker listed his birthplace as NC and his age as 66 on the 1850 Polk County TN census, and his birthplace as NC and his age as 75 on the 1860 Polk County census. On his tombstone his birth year was shown as 1786. That establishes that he was born c1784-1786 and certainly before 1790. There were only three Baker sons in North Carolina who had young sons in the 1790 NC census (David, John and Henry; Charles had only one daughter and James was unmarried and childless in 1790) and neither John nor Henry had a known son named James born before 1790. Third, the 1840 Sevier County TN census listed Crittenden Baker just above the family of a David Baker who appears very likely to be the same David Baker listed just beneath James C. Baker on the 1850 Polk County census. David B. Baker, known to be James' son, had one son born 1840 (the 1840 census shows a son under age 5); he himself was in his 20s in 1840 (the census shows a man age 20-30); the David shown in 1850 had two adult women living in his household, and the same is true of the David on the 1840 census. The likelihood then is that both Bakers moved together from Sevier County to Polk County between 1840 and 1850, a strong indicator of a close family relationship. Fourth, at least one child of the David Baker shown on the 1850 census was buried in Prospect Cemetery, McMinn County TN. That is the cemetery where James C. and Nancy Baker were buried. The chances that David was not James' son are essentially nil. Finally, David B. Baker was the oldest known son of James C. Baker. Under the naming patterns of the time (and a pattern commonly used in the Baker family), a first-born son was often named for the father's father. This strong circumstantial case warrants treatment of the following record information of James Crittenden Baker and James C. Baker as records of a single individual.

Death | bef 1870 | Susannah Baker died bef 1870 at prob Mitchell County, NC. "Susan" Pitman, age 55, appears on the 1860 Yancey County census. (Mitchell County was created in 1861.) It is not certain whether this is the same person. No one of a similar name appears on the 1870 census, though Susannah's son Solomon is on that census; the family with whom Susan Pitman was living in 1860 was in McDowell County in 1870 and no Susan Pitman was with them then. If this is our Susannah, then it thus appears that Susannah was alive at the time of the 1860 census (though age 65, not 55) but died before the 1870 census. That is only a tentative conclusion since a major portion of the 1870 Federal Census for Mitchell County is unavailable.7,8 |

Note | c 1780 | According to the Pamunkey Davenports: "... Colonel William Davenport, son of Martin Davenport of Thomas (of Martin, Sr.), ... was badly abused as a 10-year-old boy by marauding Tories (Americans actively loyal to the King) in 1780 during the Revolutionary War. Coming upon the Martin Davenport's mountain homestead while Martin was away, Tories seeking to capture him took out their frustration on young William, his son. According to Professor Lyman C. Draper, the noted Frontier historian, in his authoritative Kings Mountain and Its Heroes (1881), William's beating was one of the incidents that so enraged the Over-the-Mountain Men, who had spent five years in constant warfare with the Cherokees and Shawnees sent by the British to attack the Frontier Settlements, that they gathered together and marched southeast over the mountains to totally defeat and capture the British and their Tory adherents at Kings Mountain (8Oct1780). The year had been a desperate one for the Cause of Independence. The Continental Congress had lost most of its Southern Army at the Surrender of Charleston (19May1780), then had lost most of what was left -- as well as bottom-of-the-barrel replacements scraped from the North -- at Gates' disgraceful Defeat at Camden (16Aug1780). The Kings Mountain victory restored flagging Patriot spirits and marked a turning point in the Revolution. William's father Martin Davenport was one of those Patriots who distinguished himself at Kings Mountain, and in its aftermath is credited for assuring that those Tories who had mistreated his son were properly punished. At a quickly convened drumhead court martial, the culprits were convicted -- and summarily hung."2 |

Dorothy [Glover?] Davenport
F, b. c 1685
Birth | c 1685 | Dorothy [Glover?] Davenport was born c 1685. According to the Pamunkey Davenports: "There are several Martin Davenport, Sr., genealogies circulating which identify his wife as Dorothy Harrelson, which is surely based on the facts that Paul Harrelson [Jr.] was a neighbor to Martin in Hanover, witnessed Martin's will, and was bondsman for Dorothy as executrix of the Estate. The Harrelson association with the Davenports was limited to those three events, all within a few months in 1735. The Harrelsons came to the Hanover neighborhood from a different direction and departed sooner and in a different direction than the Davenports. Two Harrelson wills were recorded in Hanover just prior to Martin's -- one of Paul Harrelson, Sr., and one for Harrelson, Sr.'s eldest son Peter. Both were detailed in identifying heirs, mentioned no Dorothy, no Davenports, and no one closely associated with the Davenports, and included no Davenport witnesses. There were no Davenports associated with the Harrelsons in their migration from Virginia or in their settlements in the Carolinas. Nor were there any Harrelsons associated with the Davenports in their migrations."1 |
