1880 Census2 Jun 1880 George W. Cottrell (Jr.?) appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Parker County, TX, at Justice Precincts 6 & 8, enumerated 2 Jun 1880, in the household of his parents, George Washington Cottrell and Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell. He was shown as age12, born TX, working on the family farm.2
MarriageJun 1907 George W. Cottrell (Jr.?) married Birtie Jane Moss in Jun 1907 at Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX. Wichita Daily Times newspaper article of June 17, 1907 verifies marriage as does June 21, 1907 Wichita Weekly Times. The article reported that the wedding occurred at the corner of Hyde's Store in Iowa Park, while the couple sat in their buggy. The officiating judge was Justice A. L. Brubaker, and continues: 'This was the first [time he was] called upon to officiate in this line and was somewhate embarrassed, knowing that the boys would guy him. Never let a little thing like this bother you Mr. Justice.3
Census20 Apr 1910 George W. Cottrell (Jr.?) appeared on the census of 20 Apr 1910 at Wichita Falls, Wichita County, TX; age 40, a teamster, with wife Birdie, age 30, mother of one child who did not survive.3
Noteaft 20 Apr 1910  George was listed in both the 1909 and 1910 city directories for Wichita Falls, TX. He is not in the 1911, 1912, 1913 directories. He cannot be found anywhere in the United States on the 1920 census, but was in Kiowa County OK for the 1930 census. However, a death record has been found for his wife Birtie in Hockley County TX in 1932 as well as for a child, Bonnie Mae, in Hockley County in 1937. There is, as yet, no specific record of his death.
Census14 Apr 1930 He appeared on the census of 14 Apr 1930 at Dill Twp., Kiowa County, OK; Shown as age 63, age at first marriage 42 (although there are family reports of an earlier marriage), born TX of parents both born TX, working as a farm laborer on a rented farm and living with wife Birdie, age 50, age at first marriage 25, born TN of parents both born TN, daughter Bonnie Mae, age 16, born TX, daughter (Luda) Pearl, age 20, born TX, and Pearl's husband Elise (Ellis) Jackson, age 25, born TX of a father born AL and mother born TX, and their three-month-old daughter Eva Mae, born OK.4
Note26 Mar 1934  It appears that G.W. Cottrell remarried in 1934 (his wife Birdie had died in December 1932), to Mrs. Will (Gertrude) Burns. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. Alfred A. Brian, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Levelland. There is no record of the death of either George or Gertrude Cottrell but George appears to be buried in the same cemetery as Birdie and Bonnie. One source suggests a date of death of 20 Oct 1941.
Deathaft 1935 He died aft 1935 at TX.

    George Washington Cottrell

    M, b. 5 March 1821, d. 21 May 1891

ChartsDescendants of Thomas and Dorothy Davenport Baker

Birth5 Mar 1821 George Washington Cottrell was born on 5 Mar 1821 at Madison County, KY. In his application for a pension for his Mexican War service, George stated that he was born in Madison County KY '3 miles from Lexington.' The closest point in Madison County to Lexington is roughly 10.5 miles. It is therefore not entirely clear whether he was in fact born in Madison County (and a bit farther from Lexington than he stated) or in fact born in Fayette County.1
Note17 Sep 1842  On 17 Sep 1842, a marriage license was issued to G. Washington Cotrell and Mary Gilbert in Colorado County TX and the marriage was performed on 20 Sep 1842. This marriage led to charges of bigamy and adultery against Cottrell in 1843-1844, which were ultimately dismissed when the indictment was quashed (presumably for lack of evidence or the death of a necessary witness) on 4 Mar 1844 (Book A&B, Colorado County records, p. 217). It is unknown whether this is our George at the heart of these charges or (and perhaps more likely) his father. The charge was brought in the September term 1843 and charged that George W. Cottrel being a married man having his former wife alive did unlawfully marry Mary Rodgers 'since the 20th day of September 1842'.2,3
Note24 Oct 1843  On 24 Oct 1843, G.M. Cottrell was named overseer of a road project in Colorado County. Note that there is no proof that this is our George (note the difference in middle initials), and indeed may be his father. Our George was barely 22 years old and would have been quite young to be named an overseer. Most of the other men appointed on the same day to be road overseers were some 10-20 years older.4
Note1846  A volume called 'Republic of Texas: Poll Lists For 1846' by Marion Day Mullins lists the names and counties of residence of approximately 18,000 Texas taxpayers each of whom paid a 'poll' tax of one dollar. It shows that G.W. Cotterell paid the poll tax in Wharton County, TX in 1846. This may be our G.W., since Wharton and Johnson Counties were adjacent and the boundaries somewhat flexible. However, a search of the 1850 Wharton County census does not reveal anyone by a similar name, and the most likely candidate in 1850 was some distance away in Tarrant County. Nonetheless, our George's military service between 1846 and 1848 could help explain the change of venue.
Milit-Beg1 May 1846 He began military service on 1 May 1846 at Corpus Christi, Nueces County, TX, when he enlisted for service in the Mexican War.1
Note20 Dec 1846  On 20 Dec 1846, one George W. Cotrell was involved in an assault 'with force and arms' upon one Frederick Kayser in Colorado County TX and was indicted in March of 1847. This episode gives credence to the theory that there was another George W. Cotrell in Colorado County (our George's father perhaps) since George himself filed a pension application many years later stating that he had joined the Mexican War effort in May of 1846 and likely would not have been in Colorado County in December.
Milit-EndNov 1848 He ended military service in Nov 1848 at Cordova, Mexico; he was discharged from service in the Mexican War.1
1850 Census4 Nov 1850 He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Navarro District, Tarrant County, TX, enumerated 4 Nov 1850. Although it is not certain that this is our George, the most likely candidate on the 1850 census is this "G. W. Cotrel." He was shown as age 40 (in fact he would have been 30), born KY, no occupation listed, living with the family of Archie and Nancy Robinson. It is not known whether he was in any way related to the Robinsons (mentioned as a possibility since both George and Archie were born in Kentucky). This is the most likely candidate in part because he was listed in Tarrant County only through 1853; our George appeared for the first time in Parker County in 1854.5
Residence19 Aug 1851  On 19 Aug 1851, George Washington Cottrell lived at Tarrant County, TX. He was listed as 'Cuttrell, G. W.' on the 1851 Tax Assessment List for Tarrant County TX.6
Residence31 Aug 1852  On 31 Aug 1852, George Washington Cottrell lived at Tarrant County, TX. He was listed as 'Cuttrell, G. M.' on the 1852 Tax Assessment List for Tarrant County TX.6
Residence4 Jun 1853  On 4 Jun 1853, George Washington Cottrell lived at Tarrant County, TX. He was listed as 'Cottrell, G. M.' on the 1853 Tax Assessment List for Tarrant County TX. He did not appear on tax lists in Tarrant County in 1854 or thereafter.6
Residencebef Dec 1854  Bef Dec 1854, George Washington Cottrell lived at Long Creek, Parker County, TX. In the 1895 'Hood County History', transcribed in 2000 by the Hood County TX Historical Document Transcription Team, author Thomas Taylor Ewell reported: 'But about this date [1853-54] quite a number of people began to come into the Long creek valley. Martin Baker and his son Joseph, ..., George Cottrell...7
Marriage6 Dec 1854 He married Martha Louisa Baker, daughter of Martin Alexander Baker and Elizabeth Buchanan, on 6 Dec 1854 at Long Creek, Parker County, TX. According to George and Louisa's Mexican War pension applications, the marriage itself took place on December 6, 1854 in Parker County, but was apparently recorded in Johnson County (since Parker County was not yet organized) the following month, on January 29, 1855. The book containing the marriage records from Johnson County for 1855-1865 was stolen sometime after the mid-1980s. However, two transcriptions of the original records had already been made and published. One was by Weldon Hudson, and was reprinted in 2002 by the Johnson County Historical Society. The other was by the former head of the Fort Worth Historical Society and was published in their magazine 'Footprints.' Based on the strength of those two transcriptions, a request was made for certification of the marriage record by Johnson County Clerk's Office; no response was received.1,8
Residence30 Sep 1855  On 30 Sep 1855, George Washington Cottrell lived at Parker County, TX. The funeral memorial book for G.W.'s son, Martin Gilbert, indicates that he was born in Weatherford, Texas (county seat of Parker County). More likely he and his siblings were born in the Baker Community at Long Creek, Parker County.
Note13 Feb 1858  On 13 Feb 1858, with his father-in-law Martin Baker, he served one of two chain carriers on the survey for the land claimed by Charles Baker (Martin's brother) at Baker Community, Long Creek, Parker County TX, as well as one of two chain carriers on the survey for the land claimed by Josiah Baker (Martin's son, George's brother-in-law).9
Residence27 Sep 1861  On 27 Sep 1861, George Washington Cottrell lived at Parker County, TX. On that date, G.W. filed an affidavit, wherein he staked his claim to 160 acres in southern Parker County. His witnesses were J.A. Baker (older brother of his wife, Louisa Baker) and Raine Johnson. Both Cottrell (whose name was spelled Cotrell on the documents) and Johnson were unable to write: both signed the affidavit with a mark. Baker was able to sign his name. The land boundaries were up against lands held by J.A. Baker, David Baker, F. Bates and Thomas Bedford. The survey chain carriers were Martin Baker (father of George's wife Louisa Baker Cottrell) and James Johnson.10
Note10 Dec 1863  On 10 Dec 1863, G.W. Cotrell's land grant for 160 acres in southern Parker County, for which he had applied on 27 Sep 1861, was issued.9
1880 Census2 Jun 1880 He and Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Parker County, TX, at Justice Precincts 6 & 8, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. The family last name was spelled "Cotrell." George was shown as a 59-year-old farmer, born KY; Louisa was shown as "Dottie L.", age 44, born KY. Their children Mary E., Margaret "Arby" and George W. were listed as living with them. The children were shown as Mary E., age 23, Margarett, age 16, and George W., age 12. Enumerated next door in household 9 were daughter and son-in-law Aaron and (Sarah) Jane Henson; nearby in household 12 were Louisa's brother Josiah and family including his mother-in-law Nancy Fore (mother of Nancy "Kate" Fore Baker and Mary "Polly" Fore Johnson, and grandmother of Mattie Johnson Cottrell), Josiah's son James and family in household 13, and Josiah and Louisa's uncle Charles in household 15.11
Residence23 Mar 1887  On 23 Mar 1887, George Washington Cottrell lived at Long Creek, Parker County, TX. In his pension application, George W. Cottrell said he had been a resident of Parker County for 33 years (putting him in Parker County as of 1854).1
Residence17 Feb 1890  On 17 Feb 1890, George Washington Cottrell lived at Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX. In a follow-up pension application, George W. Cottrell indicated his residence at Iowa Park.1
Death21 May 1891 He died on 21 May 1891 at Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, at age 70. In Louisa Baker Cottrell's pension application, she and her son G.W. Cottrell and son-in-law Aaron Henson attested that George's death occurred on 21 May 1891 in Iowa Park, Wichita County TX.1
BurialMay 1891 He was buried in May 1891 at Highland Cemetery, Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX.

Birth11 Feb 1877 John W. Cottrell, son of Martin Gilbert Cottrell and Martha H. "Mattie" Johnson, was born on 11 Feb 1877 at TX. John's obituary places his birth at Iowa Park. That is not likely. His parents were married in Parker County in 1874; the family was on the Clay County census in 1880; the family did not move to Wichita County until about 1890. It is most likely that John was born in Clay County.1,2
1880 Census2 Jun 1880 John W. Cottrell appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Clay County, TX, enumerated 2 Jun 1880, in the household of his parents, Martin Gilbert Cottrell and Martha H. "Mattie" Johnson Cottrell. He was shown as age 3, born TX.3
Marriage8 Jul 1908 John W. Cottrell married Amelia/Emelia Beitelspacher on 8 Jul 1908 at Java, Walworth County, SD.4,5
1910 Census4 Jun 1910 John W. Cottrell and Amelia Beitelspacher Cottrell appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Mobridge, Walworth County, SD, at Third Street, enumerated 4 Jun 1910. John was shown as a 31-year-old horse trader, born TX of parents born TX; Aime was shown as age 20, born SD, married two years, mother of one. The baby was shown as less than one month old.6
Marriage9 Nov 1914 John W. Cottrell married Abigail M. Claymore on 9 Nov 1914 at Mobridge, Walworth County, SD. John listed his status as a widower at the time of the marriage. He was 32, she was 27 and not previously married. Their wedding was performed by C.E. Warner, listed as a minister.7,8
1920 Census26 Jan 1920 John W. Cottrell and Abigail Claymore Cottrell appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Trail City, Dewey County, SD, at Jackson Twp., enumerated 26 Jan 1920. John was shown as a 41-year-old liveryman running a livery business, born TX of a father born Scotland and a mother born OK; Abigail was shown as age 40, born SD. Mattie, his daughter from his first marriage, was enumerated with them; she was shown as age 9, born SD. John owned his property free of mortgages; he and Abigail could both read and write.9
1930 Census11 Apr 1930 John W. Cottrell appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Mobridge, Walworth County, SD, at Third Ward, enumerated 11 Apr 1930. John was shown as a 52-year-old salesman, born TX. Phillip was shown as a 10-year-old schoolboy, born SD. John's wife (Phillip's mother) Abigail Claymore Cottrell was a patient at the State Sanitarium being treated for tuberculosis at the time of the census. It is not clear from the census whether John had lodgers enumerated with him, or whether John and Phillip were themselves lodgers at the time of the census.10
Death12 Apr 1951 He died on 12 Apr 1951 at home, Mobridge, Walworth County, SD, at age 74. The cause of death was heart disease.

His obituary in the Mobridge SD Tribune read:

FUNERAL HELD MONDAY FOR JOHN COTTRELL

Was Pioneer Resident Of This Area; Lived At Old Evarts For Time

Requiem mass was held at St. Joseph's Catholic church here Monday morning for John W. Cottrell, 74, retired rancher and a pioneer resident of this area, who died at his home here late Thursday following an illness of several months duration.

Services were conducted by Father Myron Martin, pastor of St. Joseph's church, and interment was made in Greenwood cemetery here with Miles Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cottrell had been a resident of this area since 1903 when he trailed cattle up to Old Evarts -- early day cattle shipping center 10 miles southwest of Mobridge, now extinct -- for the Matador Cattle Co., and was known to stockmen throughout northern South Dakota.

Cottrell was born at Iowa Park, Tex., February 11, 1877. Upon arrival in this area as a young cowhand, he continued to work for cattle companies for a number of years and following the death of Old Evarts, caused by the Milwaukee Railroad extending its line to the new town of Mobridge, he moved to the Bridge City. He was associated with Jim Nichols, another former Old Evarts resident, in the operation of a business here for a number of years, before returning to ranching. He lived at Wakpala for a time and then operated a ranch near Trail City for many years prior to moving back to Mobridge during the early part of World War II.

Survivors include his widow, the former Abigail Claymore of Mobridge, whom he married November 13, 1914; a daughter, Mrs. Johnny (Mattie) Berens of Mobridge; two brothers, Clay of Virginia and Bert of Houston, Tex., and three sisters, Mrs. Ada Harris of Iowa Park, Tex., Mrs. Theo Hodges of San Antonio, Tex., and Maude of Phoenix, Ariz.

A son, Lt. Phillip Cottrell, was killed in an airplane accident in California August 4, 1943.1,2
Burial16 Apr 1951 He was buried on 16 Apr 1951 at Greenwood Cemetery, Mobridge, Walworth County, SD. The lopcation of the grave was lot 46, block B, grave no. 7.2

BirthAug 1863 Margaret "Arby" Cottrell, daughter of George Washington Cottrell and Martha Louisa Baker, was born in Aug 1863 at prob Baker Community, Parker County, TX.2,3
1880 Census2 Jun 1880 Margaret "Arby" Cottrell appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Parker County, TX, at Justice Precincts 6 & 8, enumerated 2 Jun 1880, in the household of her parents, George Washington Cottrell and Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell. She was shown as "Margarett," age 26, born TX.4
Marriage15 Nov 1885 Margaret "Arby" Cottrell married Robert C. Hollis on 15 Nov 1885 at Parker County, TX. Transcriptions of this marriage record shows R.C. Hollis and "Arley" Cottrell. On review of the document itself, however, it appears that the name was always given as "Arby", which appears to have been Margaret's middle name. That Arley/Arby and Margaret are one and the same is shown by census records: in 1900, Robert C. Hollis and Margaret A. Hollis are in Wilbarger County, married 15 years; in 1910, R.C. Hollis and Arby Hollis are in Wichita County, married 24 years; in 1920, they are in Stonewall County. Cladyne Cottrell Barrett recalls stories of her father's sisters talking about their Aunt Arby who would come to the house for dinner, eat like a horse but always have to leave to go home before the washing up.
Census20 Jun 1900 Margaret "Arby" Cottrell appeared on the census of 20 Jun 1900 at Precinct 8, Wilbarger County, TX; shown as Margaret A. Hollis, age 36, born Aug 1863 in TX to a father born TN and mother born SC, no children, married 15 years to Robert C. Hollis, age 37, a farmer born Aug 1862 in TN to parents both born TN.3
Censusbtw 26 Apr 1910 - 30 Apr 1910 She appeared on the census of btw 26 Apr 1910 - 30 Apr 1910 at Justice Precinct 3, Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX; shown as Arby, age 45, born TX to parents both born NC, married 24 years to R.C. Hollis, age 46, born TX of parents born in US. Note that no occupation is listed but merely "own income".5
Census1920 She appeared on the census of 1920 at Aspermont, Stonewall County, TX; shown as Arby, age 56, born TX of parents born TX, with husband R.C. Hollis, age 57, born TN of parents born TN, engaged in farming.6
Deathaft 1930 She died aft 1930 at prob TX. The Stonewall County tax rolls still show property in the name of Mrs. R. Hollis as late as 1930. There is no tax record as of 1931. Whether that indicates a move or a death is not known.

    1. Note that for some time there was confusion as to the separate existence of an "Arley" Cottrell based on a transcription of an 1885 marriage record in Parker County TX. Looking at the original record, however, it appears that the name given was "Arby" and not "Arley" and it now that Arby was Margaret's middle name.

ChartsDescendants of Thomas and Dorothy Davenport Baker
    Relationship2nd great-grandson of Thomas Baker.

Birth30 Sep 1855 Martin Gilbert Cottrell, son of George Washington Cottrell and Martha Louisa Baker, was born on 30 Sep 1855 at prob Baker Community, Parker County, TX. M.G.'s place of birth is sometimes listed as Weatherford but is more likely to have been Long Creek in the Baker Community there.

Although M.G.'s death certificate identifies his parents as George W. Cottrell and "Eliza" Baker, and no birth record exists, other facts establish that he was the first-born son of George Washington Cottrell and Martha Louisa Baker Cottrell. First, M.G.'s obituary states that he died at the home of his sister, Mrs. John H. Green, in Levelland (Hockley County TX) (he actually died at the home of his niece, Ludy Aycock, daughter of Mary Green). Mary E. Cottrell married John H. Green in Parker County on 4 Jan 1883; she was age 23, in the household of her father George W. Cottrell and mother "Dottie L." on the Parker County TX census in June 1880. The household recorded just before the Cottrells in that census was the household of Aaron C. and Sarah Jane Henson; Sarah Jane Cottrell and Aaron Henson married in Parker County on 1 Jan 1880. M.G., of course, had married Martha "Mattie" Johnson in Parker County on 27 Aug 1874 (the minister who married them also married the Greens). By roughly 1890, all of these families moved together to Iowa Park in Wichita County. George Washington Cottrell died there in 1891; Louisa lived with the Greens thereafter (as shown by both the 1900 and 1910 censuses); Sarah Jane died in 1898 and was buried right next to M.G.'s son Sammie in Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park. Clearly, M.G., Sarah Jane and Mary were siblings; George and Louisa were parents of all three (and others, including at least George W. and Margaret). The inconsistency of name among "Eliza," Louisa and "Dottie L." is insignificant particularly in light of the pension applications filed by both George and Louisa in the 1890s where both state they were married in Parker County in 1854 and had remained married to each other thereafter.1,2,3,4,5,6
Marriage27 Aug 1874 Martin Gilbert Cottrell married Martha H. "Mattie" Johnson, daughter of Matthew Johnson and Mary "Polly" Fore, on 27 Aug 1874 at Parker County, TX. The marriage license was issued on the same day as the marriage, which was performed by R.S. Proffitt, M.G. (Minister of the Gospel; Rev. Proffitt also performed the marriage of M.G.'s sister Mary E. Cottrell to John H. Green and of Mattie's sister Mary Johnson to Solomon Akers).6
1880 Census2 Jun 1880 Martin Gilbert Cottrell and Martha H. "Mattie" Johnson Cottrell appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Clay County, TX, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. The family was shown in Precinct 4. M.G. was shown as a 24-year-old farmer who could read and write, born TX of a father born KY and mother born NC. Mattie, shown as "M.H.," was shown as 23, unable to read or write, born KY of a father born VA and mother born GA. Their children Effalie, John W. and Nettie Hyburnia were listed as living with them. The three children (M.E. [Effalie], age 4; J.W. [John], age 3; and N.H. [Nettie], age 1) were all born TX.

Note that two of M.G.'s Baker cousins -- George W. Baker and William A. Baker, sons of M.G.'s uncle Josiah Alexander Baker -- were living nearby in Clay County and are shown either on the same census page or the immediately preceding census page as M.G. and his family.7
Note19 Sep 1889  M.G. Cottrell first bought property in Iowa Park, Wichita County TX, on 19 Sep 1889, according to a deed for Lot 2, Block 143.8
Note10 Mar 1890  On 10 Mar 1890, M.G. Cottrell registered a cattle brand in Wichita County TX.
Note25 Mar 1891  On 25 Mar 1891, M.G. and a partner, A.P. Strange, bought property described as Lot 4 in Block M of Iowa Park, Wichita County TX. The promissory notes for the purchase were paid in full and released on Mar 25 1891, recorded at book 29, pp 216-217.9
Note13 Oct 1892  On 13 Oct 1892, M.G. and Mattie sold a parcel of land in Iowa Park, Wichita County TX, to J. Fleetwood Reed. The deed suggests that they had acquired the land in March of 1890.10
Note5 May 1893  On 5 May 1893, M.G. Cottrell, with the State of Texas, sued to dissolve the incorporation of Iowa Park, Wichita County TX. The exact reason for the suit is unknown. An original trial jury found for the plaintiffs; a second jury on December 12 1893 found for the defendants.11
Occupation1897 As of 1897, Martin Gilbert Cottrell was listed in the Denver city directory; the listing mentions the company he worked for (the Wrought Iron Range Co.) and a residence of 2329 Emerson.
1900 Census9 Jun 1900 He and Martha H. "Mattie" Johnson appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Iowa Park, Wichita County, TX, enumerated 9 Jun 1900. The family last name appears as "Catrell." Martin G. and Mattie were shown as having been married 25 years. He was shown as 44, born TX Sep 1855, father born KY and mother SC. She was shown as age 42 but born TX in May 1868 (which would have made her 32, not 42), with 11 children, seven of whom were living (only 10 children are known), father born KY, mother born England. Their children Nettie Hyburnia, Theo, Maud Lillian, Gilbert Fleetwood and Clay Rex were listed as living with them. Nettie was shown as 21, born TX Feb 1879; Theo was shown as 14, born TX Mar 1885; Maud was shown as 10, born TX Jan 1890; Bert was shown as a daughter Birdie, 7, born TX Oct 1892; and Clay was shown as 2, born TX Apr 1898.12
Occupationc 1900 Martin Gilbert Cottrell served as a Deputy Sheriff at Wichita County, TX, c 1900. At the time, his wife's cousin John Silas Fore (John's father George was the brother of Mattie's mother Mary "Polly" Fore Johnson) was the Wichita County Sheriff (Fore served as sheriff from 1900-1902).13
Note14 Sep 1909  By September 1909, M.G. and Mattie Cottrell separated; they sold their home in Iowa Park. Mattie took several of children to Frederick, OK; M.G.'s whereabouts after the separation are not fully known. When he executed the deed to sell the family home on 14 Sep 1909, he was in Shelby County, TN (probably in Memphis). So far, there is no indication what he was doing there.14
Marriagebef 1920 He married Lucia Ivey bef 1920 at prob AL.15
1920 Census12 Jan 1920 Martin Gilbert Cottrell and Lucia Ivey Cottrell appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Hartford, Geneva County, AL, enumerated 12 Jan 1920. MG was shown as a 64-year-old salesman, born TX; Lucia was a 44-year-old teacher.15
Notebtw 1925 - 1929  According to Mabel Reese Hutchins, daughter of James T. and Mollie Reese of Curry County, NM, Martin Gilbert Cottrell was the preacher at the Bellview Baptist Church in the rough time period of 1925-1929. He "commuted" between Hereford (Deaf Smith County TX) and Bellview each week, arriving on Wednesday in time for the prayer meeting and staying until Sunday night after services. When in Bellview he would stay with the Reese family; James Reese was a deacon of the church (which no longer exists).

Mrs. Hutchins was a young child at the time (she was born in 1917), but in communications with the Cottrell family in May 2004 remembered clearly that the preacher had only one eye and wore a patch over the other eye. (M.G. lost an eye to cancer and wore an eye patch for the last 20 or more years of his life.)

The exact date of M.G.'s move from Bellview-Hereford to Lovington is not known. However, a news brief in the Lovington (NM) Leader on May 31, 1929, indicated that M.G. was still in Bellview as of that date, while by July 26 of that year, he was mentioned in an article in the Weatherford (TX) Democrat as a resident of Lovington. The date can thus safely be fixed in June or July of 1929.16
1930 Census17 Apr 1930 Martin Gilbert Cottrell appeared on the 1930 census of Prairieview, Lea County, NM in the household of James Robinson Baker and Mary Howard Baker, his cousin and his cousin's wife. He was shown as age 75, a widower and preacher.17
Notebtw 1931 - 1945  After going to live with his cousin James R. Baker in Lovington, Martin Gilbert Cottrell served as a Baptist minister, performing marriages, conducting funerals, preaching in church. He served for some years at Antioch Baptist Church, a small congregation east of town, about one mile west of the Texas border.18
Note12 Feb 1937  Martin Gilbert Cottrell was one of two family member ministers who conducted the funeral of James Robinson Baker, M.G.'s cousin and lifelong friend with whom he had lived for some time around 1930.19
Death26 Mar 1946 Martin Gilbert Cottrell died on 26 Mar 1946 at the home of his sister, Mary Cottrell Green, Levelland, Hockley County, TX, at age 90.2,20
Burialaft 26 Mar 1946 He was buried aft 26 Mar 1946 at Lovington Cemetery, Lovington, Lea County, NM.21,22

An article in the Lubbock TX newspaper, Thursday 8 Mar 1934, appeared under the headline "Woman Badly Burned Here" and subhead "Mrs. Nettie Holley Reported In Critical Condition At West Texas Hospital After Mishap Wednesday" read:

"Burned in her three-room apartment at 1414 Thirteenth Street Wednesday morning, Mrs. Nettie Holley, 55, a widow, was in critical condition in West Texas hospital last night.

Vapors of gasoline with which Mrs. Holley was cleaning bathroom fixtures were ignited by fire in a stove in the living room.

    ---
    Reported Weaker
    ---

An attendant at the hospital said Mrs. Holley was "weaker" late yesterday.

The fire department answered an alarm at 11:05 o'clock. Mrs. Holley's apartment, the east one on the groundfloor of a two-story brick apartment house, was not damaged greatly, firemen said.

Mrs. Holley had the window of the bathroom partly raised and air entering there evidently drove vapors of the gasoline into the living room.

The woman suffered third degree burns on the arms, legs, and face, attending physicians at West Texas hospital said. They regarded her condition as serious. The burns were deep, doctors said.

A Rix-Bynum ambulance took Mrs. Holley to the hospital.

A daughter, Miss Myrtle Holley, who lived with her mother, was called to the hospital."6

She and [daughter] Myrtle had wanted an upstairs apt in the building where they lived for a long time and when it became available, she took cleaning supplies, including gasoline (can you imagine it, but she was one of those neat-niks) upstairs to clean, shut herself in the bathroom and gas heater was in room and when gas exploded, she finally managed to squeeze through the window and went down the fire-escape to her apt....she died in hospital that night."

Her obituary, in the Lubbock TX newspaper on Friday 9 Mar 1934 appeared under the headline "Holley Rites Held Thursday" and subhead "Lubbock Woman Dies Thursday Morning Of Burns Received Wednesday; Burial To Be At Wichita Falls". It read:

"Funeral of Mrs. Nettie Holley, 55-year-old widow who was burned fatally about 11 a.m. Wednesday here, were conducted at 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon at First Methodist Church, which she attended, The body was sent by Rix-Bynum Funeral home to Wichita Falls for burial there Friday.

Death1896 Willie Cottrell died in 1896 at prob Provo, Utah County, UT. Notes by Bobette Richardson say Sammy died in Provo in 1892 and Willie in 1895. However, Sammie died in Iowa Park and is buried at Highland Cemetery. Thus, the Cottrell who died in Provo must be Willie. There is a burial record at the official Utah State History burials index website and at Ancestry.com for a "Cottrell" (no first name) in the Provo Cemetery in March 1896, gender and first name unknown. This is most likely Willie.2,3
